Deputies still believe that they are right - Dateline Florida: "Now that two judges have spoken, a Sarasota County sheriff's spokesman says two deputies I've been writing about will be subject to an internal investigation.
It's about time.
Deputies James Lutz and Stacy Ferris, whose last name recently became Brandau, showed in court this week that time hasn't changed the attitudes they demonstrated 11 months ago.
In April, they trespassed into Cynthia and John Coffin's garage at their home in Nokomis. They arrested Cynthia, a nurse with a spotless record, without the slightest justification.
As you may recall, Lutz came only to serve civil papers related to an eviction process. John Coffin, 55, is a landlord.
Cynthia says her husband, who had had quintuple bypass heart surgery, was sick and in the bathroom when Lutz arrived. She says she also told Lutz her husband had already been served the papers."

The Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon, USA: "Commissioners from counties across Oregon that are dependent on federal timber payments reacted warily to the news that they might get a year's extension of the payments.
In Coos County, which has released about 70 jail inmates and laid off dozens of employees in different departments, Commissioner Nikki Whitty was skeptical Friday that there would be any reason to restore the county cuts.
'It's a big if,' Whitty said of the bill that passed a U.S. House committee on Thursday. The bill would continue the timber payments, which make up $7 million of Coos County's $13 million general fund. 'We'd like to have the check in hand.'"

Subpoenas target Justice; White House next? : ServeNow.com: "Sen. Patrick Leahy: 'I'm surprised that they're saying that there's no politics involved and we're still 2½ weeks away from April Fool's Day.'
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said he doesn't care what the White House and Justice Department think of his subpoenas -- he wants answers.
The committee Thursday authorized the use of subpoenas to five Justice Department officials in the investigation into the dismissals of eight U.S. attorneys. Subpoenas were authorized for six of the attorneys as well.
It postponed a vote on the authorization to use subpoenas to compel White House officials to testify, including President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, and former White House counsel Harriet Miers.
Most of the federal prosecutors claim they were the political casualties of rankling the White House, and some say they were pressured by members of Congress to expedite politically charged cases.
Justice Department officials initially told Congress the removals were performance-related, which prompted an outcry from the fired lawyers. "

Automated Content Management Platform Replaces Inefficient Paper: "As the registered agent for its corporate clients, CSC acts as the legal representative of client companies in the states where they do business. In this role, the local CSC agent office receives 'service of process' (SOP) documents, such as court summons and subpoenas, on behalf of its clients who are involved in legal proceedings in a given state.
CSC needed a system that would enable it to process SOP documents more quickly and efficiently by automating manual tasks and eliminating paper. At the same time, the company wanted to create a central repository for managing, storing, and archiving the documents."

Alamogordo Daily News - Local officer has done it all: "Officer Lewis Reeves has done a little bit of everything.
He's worked for the New Mexico Mounted Patrol scouring the 'cocaine pipeline,' a section of I-40 near Moriarty, as well as been on duty during prison riots and escapes. He's served in the National Guard, been a rancher, farmer, worked for an oil company, the phone company, taught gun safety to police recruits, driven a truck just to name a few.
Reeves said the only thing he hasn't done is fly a plane.
'I take that back,' he said. 'I've never tried to fly a plane. And you don't want to be with me when I do.'
He said being a police officer is in one's blood. His father was an MP during World War I, and his wife has numerous relatives who are law enforcement officers.
Currently, the 66- year-old works as a Community Service Officer for the Otero County Sheriff's Department. He was a reserve deputy for more than a decade before that.
He spends his days serving subpoenas, conducting code enforcement and going out on animal calls. He said serving civil papers eats up a good portion of the day, but animal calls come first."

Sheriff specifies staff car rules - Newsday.com: "Nassau Sheriff Edward Reilly said yesterday that seven members of his senior staff, including himself, have county cars available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All seven can take their cars - provided so they can respond immediately to any jail emergencies - to an approved second job, as long as they don't use the vehicles for their outside employment, Reilly said.
Currently none of the seven, including undersheriff Michael Sposato, has such outside employment, he said. As reported yesterday in Newsday, the district attorney and the county investigations commissioner are probing whether Sposato used his county car to work as a process server or as a private security guard last year while he was chief of staff.
Reilly said he had discussed the allegations, made in anonymous letters to the investigators and to Newsday, and is confident there will be no finding of wrongdoing. Sposato's lawyer said his client used the county car only to drive to his outside jobs, including providing security at 15 Jones Beach concerts last summer."
