C.A. Revives Sex Harassment Suit Against Charter School: "Applying the recent California Supreme Court case of Wells v. One2One Learning Foundation (2006) 39 Cal.4th 1164—which was decided just before the rehearing of Knapp’s appeal—the justices held that PCHS was not a “public entity” subject to the act because it operates independently of LAUSD.

In Wells, the high court held that various charter schools being sued by distance learning students did not qualify as “public entities” because they were not operated by the public school system. The schools’ only relationship with the chartering districts was through the charters, the court noted, and they acted autonomously in regard to their finances, legal matters and management.

Justice Laurie D. Zelon, writing for Div. Seven, reasoned that PCHS is similarly independent of its chartering authority.

As an alleged nonprofit public benefit corporation, she said, it is a separate legal entity that has its own board of directors and authorized agent for service of process, operates on its own budget, and hires its own administrators and teachers.

McGahee sued for paternity

Buffalo News - McGahee sued for paternity: "Buffalo Bills running back Willis McGahee is facing his third paternity suit in two years, according to the Miami Herald.

Keisha Walls, 27, an elementary school teacher, claims McGahee is the father of son Kai Walls, who was born April 19, 2006. McGahee also fathered Willis McGahee IV, born Jan. 6, 2006 to Chiniqua Smith, 26, and Bria McGahee, born Jan. 17, 2005 to Dorothy Doretha McNeil, 29. McGahee, 25, was declared the biological father in those cases and is paying child support.

The Miami Herald reported that Walls met McGahee in Miami during a college break. Walls was married at the time, but said she was estranged from her husband when Kai was conceived. They are now in divorce court. Her husband took a paternity test, which she said was negative.

'I don't sleep around,' Walls told the Herald. 'It was Willis.'"

In a filing last week, Steinbuch's lawyer complained that he was having trouble finding Cox to serve her papers: First he had the wrong address, then she ignored the notices a process server left at her house. On one visit, the server 'observed that someone was in Cox's house and refused to answer the door.'"

Whether you are reading Hammett’s short stories or watching or reading The Maltese Falcon, it’s hard not to admire Sam. We always did like the strong, silent types.







5) Remington Steele. The title character of the TV show that made Pierce Brosnan a household name wasn’t even part of the show initially. In the show, it is Laura Holt who is a private detective. When she finds that few clients are willing to work with a female detective, she invents an imaginary superior named Remington Steele. The fake name is eventually adopted by Brosnan’s character.







4) Magnum, P.I. In this 80s television show, Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) was a private investigator working in Hawaii. With a tropical background and that famous, cool moustache, what’s not to love?







3) Jessica Fletcher from Murder, She Wrote was the ultimate in nosey, loveable armchair detectives. Jessica was the one that taught all would-be authors that every book tour for mystery authors ended in a mystery or a murder.

1) Sherlock Holmes, the fictional character that author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle grew to hate, was the first one to make a deerstalker cap and magnifying glass something besides hopelessly geeky. Maybe his mastermind and cool, scientific reasoning made him more like a Star Trek Captain than a sexy James Bond, but at least Holmes was having fun snorting coke and playing his violin at 221B Baker Street.

This week, truckers learned of yet another check, a pricey investigation they will need to undergo to drive their big rigs in and out of U.S. ports, including Hampton Roads.

It's required to apply for a new federal ID called the Transportation Worker Identification Credential, which is intended to make the country's 360 ports more secure against terrorism by scrutinizing the backgrounds of port workers for crimes, immigration violations and terrorist activities.

About 750,000 port workers across the country, including longshoremen, truck drivers and mariners, will need to apply for the cards. At least 15,000 workers in Hampton Roads are expected to need the high-tech cards.

Each card carries a microchip storing the fingerprints of the card owner that will eventually be read by electronic scanners at the entrances of marine terminals and shipyards."

McCloy tried again and again, each time paying the court a $15 filing fee. All three times the summonses bounced back, even after he had checked the address with the post office.
